    Edges Detection Based On Renyi Entropy with Split/Merge

    Most of the classical methods for edge detection are based on the first and second order derivatives of gray levels of the pixels of the original image. These processes give rise to the exponential increment of computational time, especially with large size of images, and therefore requires more time for processing. This paper shows the new algorithm based on both the Rényi entropy and the Shannon entropy together for edge detection using split and merge technique. The objective is to find the best edge representation and decrease the computation time. A set of experiments in the domain of edge detection are presented. The system yields edge detection performance comparable to the classic methods, such as Canny, LOG, and Sobel.  The experimental results show that the effect of this method is better to LOG, and Sobel methods. In addition, it is better to other three methods in CPU time. Another benefit comes from easy implementation of this method. Keywords: Rényi Entropy, Information content, Edge detection, Thresholdin

    The preparation and characterization of chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) blended films : mechanical, thermal and surface investigations

    In this study, blends of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) (CS/PVA) having various proportions were prepared and characterized by universal mechanical tester, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle measurements. Studying the mechanical properties of the films showed that blending improved the tensile strength, which increased with increasing PVA content up to 40% while the elongation% at break of the blends was decreased compared to that of the pure components. The obtained results of DSC suggested that some interaction between chitosan and PVA mostly took place. Static water contact angle measurements showed an improvement in the wettability of the obtained films

    Hind-foot correction and stabilization by pins in plaster after surgical release of talipes equino varus feet in older children

    Congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV) is a three dimensional deformity and is one of the most common congenital abnormalities affecting the lower limb and can be challenging to manage. Hind-foot deformity is considered the most difficult to treat. Unfortunately, the calcaneus is often small and thus difficult to control during casting after surgical release in severe or relapsed cases. We used three pins to control and maintain the hind foot correction, after surgical release, during casting in 47 cases (59 feet). We introduced a modified, coronal plane, transverse calcaneal pin. This pin is inserted from medial to lateral through the calcaneus to correct the varus mal-positioning of the calcaneus in the sagittal plane and to provide a better control on the small sized, hind-foot during casting. We paid special attention to the final hind-foot deformity after surgery, and the results were favorable after the application of this transverse pin

    Long-term protection of hepatitis B vaccination among Egyptian children

    Background: Hepatitis B Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Objective: to detect the long-term immunogenicity of the vaccine in Egyptian children after five and ten years of vaccination. Methods: Two hundreds healthy children were recruited. They were divided into two groups according to their age. Group A included 100 child, around 6 years old, vaccinated 5 years ago. Group `B` included 100 child, around 11 years old, vaccinated 10 years ago. Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) titre was tested, booster dose of the vaccine was given to children whose HBsAb was < 10 mIU/ml, then one and half month later, they were retested for HBsAb to evaluate the response. Results: Both groups had a wide range of HBsAb (2-1000 mlU/ml), and there was a significant difference in the level of the two groups. Our data proves the decline of antibody titre with time. In group A, 19 children needed a booster dose, 14 of them were vaccinated, and 10 were retested after one and half month. The results showed that 9 (90%) responded by increased level of HBsAb, with six (66.6%) showing an adequate response. In group B, 52 children had antibody titre < 10, 48 of them were vaccinated and 34 were retested one and half months later. Two out of the 34 did not respond and 32 (94.2%) responded by an increase in the antibody titre. Of those who responded, 19 had adequate response (HBsAb ≄ 100) and 13 had hypo-response (HBsAb = 10 -100). Eighty percent (80%) of boys versus 51.7% of girls responded adequately. Conclusion: Hepatitis B vaccine is an effective and successful way for preventing HBV infection.     Achieving Information Security by multi-Modal Iris-Retina Biometric Approach Using Improved Mask R-CNN

    The need for reliable user recognition (identification/authentication) techniques has grown in response to heightened security concerns and accelerated advances in networking, communication, and mobility. Biometrics, defined as the science of recognizing an individual based on his or her physical or behavioral characteristics, is gaining recognition as a method for determining an individual\u27s identity. Various commercial, civilian, and forensic applications now use biometric systems to establish identity. The purpose of this paper is to design an efficient multimodal biometric system based on iris and retinal features to assure accurate human recognition and improve the accuracy of recognition using deep learning techniques. Deep learning models were tested using retinographies and iris images acquired from the MESSIDOR and CASIA-IrisV1 databases for the same person. The Iris region was segmented from the image using the custom Mask R-CNN method, and the unique blood vessels were segmented from retinal images of the same person using principal curvature. Then, in order to aid precise recognition, they optimally extract significant information from the segmented images of the iris and retina. The suggested model attained 98% accuracy, 98.1% recall, and 98.1% precision. It has been discovered that using a custom Mask R-CNN approach on Iris-Retina images improves efficiency and accuracy in person recognition

    The Changes in the Lipid Composition of Mung Bean Seeds as Affected by Processing Methods

Nationallizenz frei zugÀnglich.This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an Alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively.This study was conducted to assess in detail the possible effects of some technological processes such as soaking, germination, cooking, soaking + cooking, and germination + cooking on the lipid composition of mung bean seeds of Giza 1 variety. TLC analysis of mung bean lipids showed that the phospholipids and triglycerides recorded the highest percentage among lipid fractions (32.26 and 30.10%), while the 1,3 diglycerides constituted the least percentage (2.80%) in mung bean seeds. The soaking, germination and cooking processes caused a decrease in the phospholipids, triglycerides and hydrocarbons accompanied with an increase in monoglycerides, 1,2-(2,3)-diglycerides, sterols and free fatty acids. Eleven fractions were separated from phospholipids class of the studied samples; seven of these fractions were identified. The major component of phospholipids was phosphatidyl choline, amounting to 21.30, 17.84, 16.21, 13.87, 13.20 and 11.47% of the total phospholipids in raw, soaked, germinated, raw-cooked, soaked-cooked and germinated-cooked mung bean seeds, respectively. Gas liquid chromatography of the total lipids of mung bean seeds showed that the unsaturated fatty acids represented 69.58, 64.35, 63.3, 63.16, 61.84 and 61.12%, while the levels of saturated fatty acids were low being 30.37, 34.05, 35.66, 34.64, 37.93 and 38.75% of the total fatty acids in raw, soaked, germinated, raw-cooked, soaked-cooked and germinated-cooked, respectively. The total essential fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic) represented the highest proportion of fatty acids (50.10% of the total fatty acids)
